competition; the activity or condition of striving to gain or win something by defeating or establishing superiority over others. we see it everywhere. in sports, in jobs, in social medias, in schools and even in nature itself. the urge to compete and be the best, literally lies in us. to be honest, I don’t think it’s a bad thing. competition can be a good motivator as it pushes us to strive for the better, it forms us but sometimes, it could also break us.

because the truth is that there will always be someone who is better at something than us. we can’t run from this truth, nor can we hide from it or fight against it. the only thing we could do is to accept it. however, it would be sad if it ends there, right?

that’s why there would always be that someone who you will always compete with, and this should be the person you were yesterday. because although you can’t always be the best in everything, you can always try to be the best version of yourself.

i feel like the same could be applied for my relationship with Islam; not the competition, but the idea that i am always given the chance to be a better Muslimah, day by day. although sometimes, the track records wouldn't always be clean. sometimes, i feel like i've failed myself as a Muslim. however, it is refreshing to know that Allah is the most forgiving, al-Ghaffur. everyday, the person i would want to compete with is myself, what about you?

YOU'RE NOT ALONE

 

When I was a little girl, I used to think that whatever my sister does, I should follow since she is my role model. I mean, who wouldn’t want to be her? She’s smart, talented, loved by many, she’s pretty much everything that I want to be. So, when she got accepted to a boarding school, naturally I did what all naïve people would do, I worked my way, burned the midnight oil just to get into the same school that she went, MRSM Langkawi.

By then, the UPSR days had ended, and we were all waiting for our results. A few months later, came the most awaited day; I got what I wanted – 5As and off I go to the school of my dreams. The first few weeks at the school was literally a dream, filled with competitive smart kids, daily congregational prayers, we get to eat 5 times a day and all that. But then, after a month in, I just started feeling lonely – like there’s just a small emptiness in me, and I just did not know what to do.

I tried to shake things off by joining a lot more activities, to make myself busy. It was working quite well to the point where I got selected to represent the school for tracks and cross-country. For a good period of time, I did feel something, but then the void started to fill in again, and I just felt very alone. I still remember there were nights were I just had to cry myself to sleep. I talked to some of my friends about it, even became close to some of the people that I looked up to, and they are very nice people. Kept on reminding me that Allah is always here with me and kept on inviting me to go to the surau together with them, for prayers – the Sunnahs and the obligatory ones, for the sake of our friendship and the Deen.

I remember this one very particular day, when everything got so bad and I just felt like giving up, my friends came to me and asked if I wanted to go for our Dhuha prayer with them. I went and I took my wudhu’, prayed Dhuha, and then had a little bit more time to spare. So, I took my Quran, and flip to a random page, and there it was; the verses that helped me a lot.

مَا وَدَّعَكَ رَبُّكَ وَمَا قَلَى ﴿۳

Your Lord has not taken leave of you, [O Muḥammad], nor has He detested [you].

— Saheeh International

وَوَجَدَكَ ضَالًّا فَهَدَى ﴿۷    

And He found you lost and guided [you],

For 5 years, MRSM Langkawi’s surau – Raudhatul Muttaqin, had been my asylum. The place where I felt at peace and brought me serenity. I would spend hours on hours there, praying to God, crying to Him about my problems, reading the Quran, learning my study materials; and it felt like home whenever I’m there. I always felt alone whenever I walk around my school, but when I’m there, it feels like a huge weight just got off my shoulder, and I’m back at my happy place. I hope that you will find your peace. After all, this Dunya is just a pitstop for us all to ready ourselves for the inevitable. This is a reminder that you're not alone, you have never been alone, and Allah will always be there to guide you.

THE FRAGILITY OF TIME.

Hey guys! It's been a day since my last post and I kind of miss writing somewhat a personal yet meaningful post. Today, my advice to all of my readers is to appreciate the gravity that time is scarce, and we should spend our time on a lot of things that matters to us thoughtfully.

Today, my mum and my youngest brother aged a year older. It feels like it has only been only a year or two when I made these cute cards with my friends from school for my baby brother when he was conceived. He’s 13 years old now and my mum is 54. Soon, my younger brother will be finishing Secondary school, my mum would be retiring, and I'd be a university graduate. For all of us, time flies quickly. Sometimes rushing past us, as we enter different stages of our lives and sometimes, we are not ready to progress with ourselves and our loved ones.

I feel like this is one of those times where I'd quote the entire globe when they say, "Time is money." However, I believe this is an excellent opportunity to emphasise an Islamic viewpoint in which Allah declares in the Quran, in Surah Al-Asr, in three verses establishing a comprehensive framework for human life. For every sincere believer understands that life on earth is fleeting and that the ultimate fulfilment consists in pleasing our God and conducting our lives in accordance with His Commandments.

The important truth that this surah maintains is that throughout human history, there has been only one desirable and trustworthy route - the one that the surah identifies and explains. All other routes would only lead to failure and disaster. In short, the path begins with the acceptance of faith, followed by good actions and exhortation to pursue the truth and to constancy. Allah swears by time, all human beings are in loss, except those who have Imaan, those who do righteous deeds and remind others of Haqq and Sabr.

So, I'm here to remind you that we should always appreciate our time that we have with our loved ones and our personal relationship with the Deen. Our time with our parents and close relatives is scarce and we should appreciate the memories we have made and the ones we still can while they are still with us. Lastly, our connection with our own personal faith should be patient and sincere, we should accept and embrace the fact that one day, we will all return to our Lord and our connection with him is what matters most with the time he has given us.
